Happy Mother's Day

What happened to my baby?

Happy Mother's Day to all of you mothers and to all of those who support mothers. I had this long, sappy post written in my head but, well...it was just too cliche and I hate cliches (I think this is one of my problems with Eat, Pray, Love...too many cliches in there...). I'm not too hot on sap, either.

Instead, I'll tell you what I had my students make their mothers. They each made a colorful card and on the inside there is a paper vase on one side. The kids filled the vase with flower coupons and wrote why they loved their mom. One child pulled me aside, fretting over what to get his mom. "She will love anything you buy her," I told him. "but you can also give her peace and quiet and that costs nothing!" He got so excited at this and wrote 'peace and quiet' on his flower coupon.

I had a day filled with peace and quiet. Some treasured alone time so I could rejuvenate. I didn't get around to creating any artwork, but the day is not over (though the peace and quiet soon will be...Erik is due home soon). I cleaned like a madwoman yesterday, so I could enjoy a (relatively) hair and clutter free abode today. There is something truly energizing about spending a day deep cleaning and throwing away stuff. No wonder it is the first step in fixing feng shui foibles.

Another Mother's Day gift was the news that my layoff has been rescinded! I'm safe for at least another year, and then I'm up for tenure.

So, things are looking up.
